Future waste
A producer should only be legally responsible for the recycling and associated costs of its own products sold in the future (after 13 August 2005).
All products must carry clear producer identification. Preferably, a EU product/ producer identification should be established.
Provisions for financing future waste should be made by a producer at the time a new product is placed on the market. Financial guarantees are required by the WEEE directive.
- The objective is to ensure that the cost for recycling products from actors that disappear will not fall on other producers or on society.
- National legislation needs to demand these guarantees.
- Producers should be allowed to select the most suitable instrument for the financial guarantee, as long as it fulfils the objectives.
National Registers should include notification of the guarantee provided by each company, and its financial accreditation.
