Producer responsibility in WEEE and batteries

The Producer of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) as well as the Producer of portable batteries and accumulators has a legal obligation to organize the collection, waste management and recycling of the products it places on the market. The national authority for producer responsibility in Finland is Pirkanmaa ELY Centre (PIRELY), who supervise the compliance. In Åland the authority is the State Department of Åland (ÅLR).

The producer has to be registered as EEE and/or Battery Producer in Finnish Producer register. The registered producers and producer organisations accepted to the register have to report the amounts placed on, collected and recycled from Finnish market to the Pirkanmaa ELY Centre and ÅLR.

The producer responsibility includes organising separate collection, storage and logistics to recycling treatment plants. The network of collection points for the Finnish consumers has to be comprehensive and nationwide. The producer needs to provide sufficient collateral to ensure fulfilling of collection and recycling responsibilities. Producer organisations organise the fulfillment of producer responsibilities in a cost effective manner.

ERP Finland is the only producer organisation that takes care of both EE and Battery producer responsibility with the same agreement.
