Li-Cycle sends out first shipment of recycled battery material

North American lithium-ion battery resource recovery company, Li-Cycle Corp., has sent out its first shipment of commercially recycled battery material. The shipment was processed at Li-Cycle’s facility in Ontario, Canada, and consisted of metals essential to lithium-ion batteries, including cobalt, nickel and lithium.

Li-Cycle also announced plans to open its first US-based facility in Rochester, New York, hoping to tap into the robust lithium-ion battery supply chain present in the United States. The new facility should be up and running by the end of the year, and is set to create at least 23 new permanent positions.

Founded in 2016, Li-Cycle is one of the only companies in the world currently able to recover and process critical material from lithium-ion batteries in a safe and sustainable manner.

With analysts calling for upwards of 559 million electric vehicles worldwide by 2040, the importance of finding suitable end-of-life solutions will be more important than ever. Li-Cycle’s technology can at present recover 80-100% of all materials found in lithium-ion batteries, using a two-step mechanical and hydrometallurgical process.
