European Week for Waste Reduction
CREW “Reconnect”
ERP Portugal, waste compliance scheme, in partnership with Lipor - Intermunicipal Waste Management Service of Greater Porto, marks the European Week for Waste Reduction, which is celebrated from the 21st to the 29th of November, with several initiatives of CREW project, among them the launch of a dedicated website and educational tools (games, demonstration videos) to test the whole community and encourage the recovery of electrical and electronic equipment, extending its useful life.
Currently, there are four Waste Recovery Centers for Electrical and Electronic Equipment (CREW) in Porto region, where the objective is to extend the useful life of equipment with recovery potential, avoiding its early disposal. The community's involvement and training for this mission is at the CREW project origin in promoting the circular economy in the environmental, social and economic aspects.
To promote this concept, and within the scope of the European Week for Waste Reduction, activities will be held to encourage the maintenance and repair of equipment, educating the population for these practices at MAR Shopping de Matosinhos and Loulé and at Parque Nascente, in Gondomar. In MAR Shopping spaces, citizens will be able to deliver equipment with recovery potential, which will later be repaired by the CREW team and donated to Re-Food families. Parque Nascente will hold 2 sessions “Repair (in) this” live on Instagram, where they will give tips on maintenance and repair of a lamp and an iron.
The CREW Team, composed of Lipor employees, reinforces that “the CREW centers have played an essential role in promoting the circular economy. This week we want to promote them and make them known to even more people, in order to have a growing interest in this logic of repair and recovery, before thinking about buying a new product when what we have may still have a solution”.
Worldwide, around 50 million tonnes / year of WEEE is produced and, if nothing is done, it is estimated that the amount of this waste will more than double by 2050.
All of these actions will be published on the ERP Portugal website, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn of the entity and, also, through mupis in the Porto region.
