Malta Set to Remove WEEE Eco-Contribution
on electronic devices on September 1, 2015
As published on the site of the Maltese Ministry of the Environment, the eco-contribution on electrical and electronic equipment is set to be removed on September 1, 2015:
As promised in its electoral manifesto, the Government has initiated eco-contribution reform. In terms of the Budget 2015, “the Government is committed to reform the eco-contribution mechanism so that local businesses compete on a level playing field with foreign ones. The first phase of the reform will entail eliminating eco-contribution on electronic and white goods classified as WEEE items by September 2015”.
The amendments to the Eco-Contribution Act and Waste Management Regulations that transposed the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive mean that companies that put EEE products on the Maltese market will be expected to either join an authorised waste management scheme or provide concrete plans for self-compliance by the end of August.
