Leap into action at the annual Cambridge electronic recycling event

22 lutego, 2016

Leap into recycling action this 29th February and 1st March 2016 by dropping off your broken or unwanted electronics at a two-day event at the University of Cambridge.

The event at the Sidgwick Site Car Park, Sidgwick Avenue, Cambridge CB3 9DD provides free e-waste drop off for businesses, colleges, residents and schools and all items collected will be recycled.

The event is conveniently located on the University Campus, and is easily accessible by bicycle, public transport, as well as vehicles, making it the perfect opportunity for those who may been putting off recycling their electronics. This convenience has proved popular with students, local residents and University departments over the last five years. Local businesses – which may not have regular arrangements in place to collect their electronic waste – are also keen to avail of this free service.

The recycling event takes place on Monday 29th February, from 7.30 am to 5 pm, and on Tuesday 1st March, from 7.30 am to 3.30 pm. All types of business and household electronic waste will be accepted for free and staff will be on hand to help with unloading.

The event is being hosted by Cambridge Business Improvement District (BID), Cambridge City Council, European Recycling Platform (ERP), and the University of Cambridge as part of a drive to increase the amount of e-waste that is recycled. The previous four events have already recycled nearly 100 tonnes of electronic waste.

According to research conducted by the United Nations University in 2014, the UK is the world’s fifth largest producer of waste electronics. On average, each person in the UK generates 23.5kg of e-waste each year but, in 2014, recycled just under 8 kg of their waste electronics. This means that precious resources are being lost as the materials used to make electronic goods are valuable and can be used to make new products. All e-waste collected at the event will be sorted and treated within the UK.

Cllr Peter Roberts, Executive Councillor for Environment and Waste, Cambridge City Council, commented: “It’s very likely that most households have reusable or recyclable items, large and small, gathering dust. We ask residents to dispose of their electrical and electronic appliances that they no longer need in a responsible manner and this is an ideal opportunity.”

Peter Lumb, University of Cambridge Environmental Coordinator, said: “We are delighted to be hosting this event at the University of Cambridge’s Sidgwick Site this year, and hope it will be just as successful as previous years. The event will provide a great opportunity for us to encourage our staff, as well as students at the University, to send electrical and electronic waste to be recycled. We’re also pleased that we can play a part in ensuring that electronic waste is recycled in the wider Cambridge area, and look forward to working closely with our partners ERP, Cambridge City Council and Cambridge BID to make the event a big success.”

Becky Burrell, Marketing and Commercial Manager for Cambridge BID stated: “Cambridge Business Improvement District (BID) are delighted to be supporting this recycling event now in its 5th year. Cambridge BID is committed to assisting with the delivery of projects that help reduce CO² emissions and support a green and sustainable city and believe this is an excellent opportunity for BID businesses to be able to recycle their electronic waste for free. We will work very closely with the businesses and organisations within the city centre to ensure the event is well publicised and as successful as the previous four years”

John Redmayne, ERP UK General Manager, said: “This is the fifth year running that we have helped to organise this great event in Cambridge. We look forward to it each year because we are always impressed how many people and businesses in Cambridge do their bit for the environment and bring along their e-waste for recycling.”
