Category 15 covers disposable e-cigarettes, rechargeable vaping devices, vape pods, cartridges and associated charging equipment. Under this new structure, producers will be responsible for funding the collection, treatment, recovery and recycling of their devices, creating a more sustainable system that properly accounts for the environmental considerations of these products.

Key dates and WEEE compliance requirements: Planning your vape producer compliance journey

The regulatory changes came into force on 12th August 2025, and we know that understanding the timeline ahead is essential for planning your compliance approach effectively.

• Within 28 days of first placing vapes on the UK market, producers (those manufacturing in the UK or importing into the UK) need to register as an EEE producer. This is your opportunity to establish your compliance framework and begin building the data collection and reporting systems that will support your ongoing obligations.
• From 12th August 2025, separate data collection requirements for vapes began. This means separately recording the weight of all ‘Vape & Electronic Cigarettes Etc.’ products placed on the UK market so that they can be reported under the new category.
• By 31st March 2026, the government will set targets for the collection and recycling of waste vapes for 2026. These targets will be translated into obligations for compliance schemes, who then work with their members to meet these collective goals.
• Throughout 2026 and beyond, producers will need to submit quarterly reports via their compliance schemes, providing detailed information on weights, categories and volumes.
