ERP Netherlands Commits to a Circular Textile Chain
Newcomer Signs Significant Contracts with Partners
ERP Netherlands has started the year positively by securing contracts with various textile collectors, sorters, and recycling companies. Additionally, the company is in discussions with more parties, including the Royal Dutch Association for Waste and Cleaning Services (NVRD).
With these partnerships, ERP looks forward to 2025 with confidence, aiming primarily to fulfill the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) obligations of its clients.
General Manager Tjaco Twigt is very optimistic: "Since our launch in the Netherlands in 2023, we have grown into a substantial player with a portfolio of over 85 textile producers, both large and small, and a growing market share of 17%. We are also building a quality and reliable network of partners, including collection and sorting company Erdotex, Wolkat, Byewaste, Looper, Second Life, and Regain."
In addition to making the chain circular by collecting, reusing, and recycling textiles for clients, ERP will also launch campaigns to raise public awareness about the importance of proper textile collection. Furthermore, there will be efforts to encourage the purchase of used clothing. "There's work to be done," says the general manager.
He explains: "We believe that producer responsibility is a proven system for organizing reuse and recycling. As a relatively new player in the Dutch textile market, we have more to discuss and arrange with all partners in the chain compared to other parties. The advantage is that we bring a fresh perspective and can make clear agreements."
ERP identifies several issues in the textile chain it aims to help resolve. The sector currently faces significant challenges, such as the stagnation of second-hand clothing markets in Eastern Europe and Africa. "Where should all this clothing go?" Twigt outlines the dilemma. "The sector is increasingly entering a crisis, while the government imposes stricter requirements. To overcome this, several key changes are necessary."
According to ERP Netherlands, five solutions are readily available:
- Improve collection processes.
- Increase the sale of used clothing within the Netherlands.
- Ensure exported textiles are better sorted and monitored.
- Automate sorting processes and enhance sorting for both reuse and recycling.
- Rapidly improve the quality and scale of fiber-to-fiber recycling.
In the coming years, ERP will make a strong effort to contribute significantly to these solutions as a substantial player, thereby promoting a more circular textile chain in the Netherlands.
