New battery categories from 2026
From January 1, 2026, manufacturers in Austria must report according to the five new categories.
The following battery types and chemical compositions must be reported from January 1, 2026:
- Portable batteries – standard batteries commonly used in household appliances, electronics, etc.
- Batteries for light vehicles (“LV batteries,” e.g., e-bikes, e-scooters, etc.)
- Starter batteries – for vehicles, machines, starting systems, etc.
- Industrial batteries – large-format or non-mobile batteries, e.g., in industrial plants, stationary storage systems.
- Electric vehicle batteries – batteries intended for powering electric vehicles.
Starting in autumn 2025, registrations in the EDM (Elektronische Datenmanagement) System will be automatically adjusted.

August 18, 2026: Mandatory labeling requirements
February 18, 2027: QR codes and digital battery passports become mandatory
August 18, 2027: Minimum standards for battery performance
August 18, 2031: Introduction of recycled material usage quotas
