SAVING NATURAL RESOURCES: RECYCLE TO PROTECT THE FUTURE

Natural resources are not infinite. The continuous extraction of raw materials not only depletes the planet’s reserves but also disrupts ecosystems, contributes to climate change, and affects biodiversity. Conserving these resources is essential to ensure a sustainable future for coming generations.

Through proper separation and management of our waste—especially Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and Waste Batteries and Accumulators (WBA)—we can significantly reduce environmental impact and move towards a more circular and responsible economy.

At European Recycling Platform (ERP), we facilitate the collection and proper treatment of this waste, promoting the reuse of valuable materials. This not only helps preserve natural resources but also drives more sustainable production and consumption.

Why is it important to save natural resources?

The extraction of raw materials such as metals, minerals, and water has a huge environmental impact—on nature, human health, and overall quality of life.

– Mining and deforestation: Mining alters the land and often involves large-scale deforestation. This destroys habitats and reduces biodiversity. Additionally, the extraction of rare earth elements—essential for manufacturing electronic devices—is particularly polluting.

– Pollution: Extractive activities generate toxic waste that can leak into water supplies, pollute the air, and degrade the soil—harming both ecosystems and nearby communities.

– Climate change: The extraction, transportation, and processing of natural resources consume massive amounts of energy, mostly from fossil fuels, which significantly contributes to greenhouse gas emissions.

That’s why supporting reuse and/or proper management of WEEE and WBA is an effective way to reduce this impact. By recovering valuable materials through recycling, we avoid the need for continued resource extraction, protect the environment, and promote the circular economy.

How does recycling contribute to resource savings?

Proper waste management and recycling make it possible to recover valuable materials that can be reused in new production processes. This avoids the extraction of new raw materials, which carries a high environmental and energy cost.

Proper waste separation is essential to reduce environmental impact and support a more circular production and consumption model.

  • Metals like copper, aluminum, and lithium—crucial for manufacturing new electronic devices—can be recovered from WEEE, reducing the need for new mining operations and their environmental consequences.
  • Rare earth elements, a group of critical chemicals used in modern technologies like mobile phones, rechargeable batteries, wind turbines, and electric vehicles, are limited, complex to extract, and highly polluting. Their recovery through recycling is key to preserving these strategic resources.

  • Plastics, glass, and other components, when properly managed, can be treated, recycled, and reused in new products, preventing them from ending up in landfills or natural environments.

ERP’s Role

At ERP Spain, we promote sustainable solutions that enable efficient recycling, helping close the loop for electronic products, batteries, and accumulators, while ensuring responsible waste management.

Our goal is to maximize material recovery and reduce the environmental impact associated with these products.

We manage the collection, transport, and treatment of WEEE and WBA in compliance with European regulations.

We apply innovative processes that optimize the recovery of valuable materials and minimize the generation of non-recyclable waste.

Since 2007, we’ve collected over 506,000 tonnes of WEEE, and since 2010, we’ve recovered more than 36,000 tonnes of WBA, helping save natural resources and support the ecological transition.

How can you help?

Citizen participation is key to advancing sustainable resource management.

  • Prioritize reuse and refurbishment of electrical and electronic devices whenever possible. Extending the life of products is the most efficient way to reduce natural resource consumption.

  • Drop off WEEE and WBA at authorized collection points. Proper treatment allows for the recovery of valuable materials and prevents waste from polluting the environment.

  • Stay informed and separate waste properly at home, at work, or in your community. This makes later recycling processes much more effective.
