Communities in County Cavan to avail of free recycling events at local Lidl stores
ERP partners with Lidl Ireland to offer a series of free household electrical recycling events
Communities in County Cavan are being urged to bring their batteries, electrical, and electronic waste to a free recycling event at Lidl’s store on Ballinagh Road from 10am – 4pm on Saturday, 11th May.
This free public event organised by the European Recycling Platform (ERP) and supported by Lidl Ireland and Cavan County Council offers an accessible collection point for communities to recycle their household electronic waste – that is anything with a plug, cable, or battery. A further event is scheduled to be held at Lidl Virginia, County Cavan on Saturday, 24th August.
Recognised as one of Ireland’s most sustainable companies, Lidl has worked with ERP Ireland since 2006 to educate consumers on safe recycling practices and empower communities across Ireland to embrace sustainable practices, in line with the retailer’s overarching sustainability strategy, A Better Tomorrow. Since 2018, Lidl’s free electrical recycling events with ERP Ireland have collected more than 184,000 kg of e-waste.
In partnership with ERP, Lidl stores in Cavan, Clare, Dublin, Kerry, Limerick, Louth, Meath and Monaghan operate free battery recycling all year round and since 2018, Lidl stores in these counties have collected more than 77,000kg of batteries.
Commenting on Lidl Ireland’s partnership, Yvonne Holmes, Head of Corporate Communications at ERP Ireland said:
“We are delighted to partner with Lidl Ireland to offer a series of free household electrical recycling events in Cavan. These events are consciously planned to take place in communities whereby direct access to recycling facilities is not available.”
“With 84% of Irish households hoarding an average of 15 to 20 broken or unused electrical items in their home, there has never been a better time to declutter while positively impacting on the environment and supporting a more circular economy. Together with Lidl and our partners, we want to remind householders that any item with a plug, cable or battery can be recycled at these events – big or small - from TVs, washing machines, IT equipment and power tools to mobile phones, battery-operated toys and wireless ear buds.”
“Old and broken electronics and appliances are a rich source of essential critical raw materials, so it is vital that Irish households recycle the millions of broken and perfectly recyclable electrical items that are accumulating in our homes.”
Elaine O’Connor, Head of Sustainability at Lidl Ireland said:
“At Lidl, we're proud to work with ERP Ireland to engage every community, particularly those areas where access to recycling facilities is limited, to participate in free electrical recycling collections. Last year, our free recycling events at stores across Ireland have seen an impressive 70,000kg of electrical goods collected for recycling.”
“Small steps like recycling old household items can make a huge difference to the environment and, as a responsible and sustainably focused retailer, we are committed to educating and empowering consumers to embrace sustainable practices and help create ‘A Better Tomorrow.”
“With many of us focused on the big spring clean, we’re calling on communities in County Cavan to take some time ahead of these recycling events to dig out any old electricals and electronics no longer in use and bring them to Lidl Cavan, Ballinagh Road on Saturday, 11th May. It couldn’t be easier to offload unwanted and often bulky household items all whilst doing your bit for the environment and your local community.”
Lidl Ireland was ranked #6 in the RepTrak Sustainability Index for 2023 and was awarded the Gold Plastic Pledge Award at the Pakman Awards in 2023 for its ongoing work across Lidl’s product ranges to replace mixed materials with easier to recycle mono materials.
ERP Electrical Recycling Drop Off Event will take place on Saturday 11th May from 10am to 4pm at Lidl Cavan Ballinagh Road Car Park in County Cavan and at Lidl Cavan, Virginia Car Park on Saturday, 12th August.
