Circular Economy: EU Directive on single-use plastics officially adopted

June 12th, 2019

the European Directive on the single-use plastics, which the European Parliament approved in March, has been adopted also by the Council of the European Union.

The Directive's purpose is to spread awareness of the damages deriving from excessive consumption of these products and their failure or incorrect disposal and consequently intends to decrease the quantity of waste that is dispersed in the environment and causes pollution.

To achieve these objectives, two importants  changes have been introduced:

  1. The prohibition of using certain single-use plastics products, especially if they can be replaced by products made with recycled materials;
  2. The Extended Producer Responsibility's principle, which must deal with the financing of the waste collection and management system deriving from the product at the end of its life.
