New Single-use Plastics Restrictions in England
From 1st October 2023, there are additional restrictions coming into force which mean businesses must no longer supply, offer or sell certain single-use plastic items in England.
Who does this affect?
Retailers, suppliers and manufacturers of single-use plastic items.
What are the new restrictions?
The new restrictions will mean the following items must not be supplied in England:
- Single-use plastic plates, trays and bowls supplied to members of the public;
- All single-use plastic cutlery and single-use balloon sticks; and
- Polystyrene cups and food containers for ready-to-consume food
There are some exemptions, depending on the type of item.
Why have these restrictions?
Single-use plastics are commonly littered, can take many years to break down in the environment and cause pollution. Even when collected separately they are difficult to recycle.
Restrictions already in force?
There are already some restrictions in England on some single-use plastic items including plastic straws, cotton buds and drink stirrers and a charge for plastic carrier bags.
Restrictions in the other UK Nations?
There are similar restrictions in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It's best to check the specific guidance notes for each nation, where applicable.
What do you need to do?
If you are a business supplying these single-use items in England, read the full Government guidance here.
