Q3 UK Batteries Compliance Data for 2023

The Environment Agency published the Q3 2023 UK Battery data on 1st December 2023

Portable batteries placed on the UK market (POM)

Q3 2023 saw an 8% increase (660 tonnes) in the volume of portable batteries being placed on the UK market from this time last year.

The charts below compare portable batteries being placed onto the UK market year to date at the end Q3 in 2021, 2022 and 2023. Total volumes in 2023, whilst not starting strongly, increased in Q2 and Q3 2023 from same time last year:

Waste portable batteries collected

The Q3 2023 collection data shows a 10% overall increase from this time last year (Q3 2022), and specifically, waste portable ‘others’ batteries significantly increased by 127%.

The charts below compare the volumes of waste portable batteries collected year to date at the end Q3 in 2021, 2022 and 2023. Much like POM volumes (not starting strongly), the total Q2 and Q3 collection volumes in 2023 have increased from 2022.

Continuing the trend seen in Q2, there was a further reduction in portable lead acid battery collections in Q3 2023, which coincides with a rise in the amount of portable ‘other’ batteries being collected, suggesting the reliance on portable lead acid batteries being used for evidence is beginning to drop.

Outlook for the compliance year

Based on the Q3 2023 data, the UK collection rate for 2023 is 37.27%, which is 82.81% towards the 2023 target (45%).
