Schools in Powys collect massive 1.72 tonnes of batteries

Schools across Powys collected over 1.7 tonnes of household batteries – more than the weight of a medium-sized family car – after taking part in a battery recycling challenge.

Powys County Council organised the free battery recycling competition during the autumn school term, which saw over 4,000 schoolchildren take part.

The competition encouraged youngsters to collect batteries for recycling, from home and at school. The schoolchildren collected an incredible 1.72 tonnes of domestic batteries between September and December 2017.

Llanbedr Church in Wales School, near Crickhowell, was the competition’s winners after they collected an impressive 4.77kg of batteries per pupil. Second place went to Brecon’s Ysgol Penmaes, after collecting 3.59kg of batteries per pupil, and Newbridge-on Wye Church in Wales School finished third after collecting 2.05kg of batteries per pupil.

ERP UK sponsored the prizes, provided the battery collection boxes and arranged the recycling of the batteries.

Cllr Phyl Davies, Cabinet Member for Waste and Recycling, praised all the schools who took part in the challenge.

“Recycling batteries is good for the environment as this conserves resources and saves energy by reducing the need for new raw materials,” said Cllr Davies.

“We have estimated that over 78,000 individual batteries have been diverted from landfill thanks to the competition.

“It is encouraging to see Powys children show such enthusiasm and commitment to recycling and the local environment, particularly collecting so many batteries at home and at school and preventing these materials being disposed of to landfill.

“Thank you to everyone who took part in this worthwhile competition and well done to Llanbedr Church in Wales School for winning the competition.”
