The European Recycling Platform (ERP) highlights the potential of waste as a resource and invites citizens and companies to join the recycling movement

The Environment Agency published the Q3 2023 UK WEEE data on 1st December 2023.

The data demonstrates that the UK is on track to meet the WEEE collection targets for the first time since 2016.

EEE placed on the UK market (POM)

The table below demonstrates that over 22,600 tonnes less EEE was placed on the UK market when comparing against the same period last year (Q3 2022).

There was a reduction across all categories of EEE, especially in Small Household Appliances (Cat 2) which was down by 15% and Display equipment (Cat 11) which was down by 10%. Some categories, including Lighting Equipment (Cat 5) and Cooling Appliances (Cat 12) increased slightly, but overall, there was a 6% decrease from this time last year.

The charts below compare the volumes of EEE placed onto the UK market year to date at the end Q3 in 2021, 2022 and 2023. Volumes appear to be declining.

WEEE collected

As the table below demonstrates, the overall collected tonnage in Q3 2023 was similar to that collected in Q3 2022, with just under 2,000 tonnes difference across all streams, mostly due to increased Small Mixed WEEE (Categories 2-10) and Display Equipment (Cat 11) collections.

Similar to the Q2 2023 data, Q3 2023 data indicates just a 2% increase of total volume of WEEE collected when compared to the same period last year. LHA (Cat 1) and Gas Discharge Lamps (Cat 13) collections were lower than this time last year (-4% and -5% respectively), but all other streams show an increase, especially Display Equipment (Cat 11), by over 1,000 tonnes (9%) and Small Mixed WEEE (Categories 2-10), by over 2,000 tonnes (6%).

The charts below compare the volumes of WEEE collected year to date at the end Q3 in 2021, 2022 and 2023. LHA (Cat 1) collections are in decline, whilst Display (Cat 11) and Small Mixed WEEE (Categories 2-10), are increasing. Overall totals being collected in 2023 and very similar to 2022:

Outlook for the compliance year

When looking at the Q3 2023 collection volumes against the collection targets for 2023, this demonstrates that most streams continue to be either on target or exceeding the targets, with the exception of Large Household Appliances (Cat 1) and Gas Discharge Lamps (Cat 13) which are slightly down after Q3 (both were on track after Q2 2023).

Cooling Appliances (Cat 12) collections have increased in Q3 2023 and are now exceeding the target (Cooling was at 48% after Q2). It’s worth noting that both Display Equipment (Cat 11) and Small Mixed WEEE (Categories 2-10) continue to perform much better than in previous years.
