Q1 UK Batteries Compliance Data for 2024
Q1 2024 saw an 3% increase (226 tonnes) in the volume of portable batteries being placed on the UK market (POM) from this time last year.

Q1 2024 saw an 3% increase (226 tonnes) in the volume of portable batteries being placed on the UK market (POM) from this time last year.
The charts below compare portable batteries placed onto the UK market in quarter 1 over the last four years (2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024).
Waste portable batteries collected
The Q1 2024 collection data shows a 2% overall increase from this time last year (Q1 2023), and specifically, waste portable NiCd and ‘others’ batteries decreased, whilst Lead acid collection increased.
The charts below compare the volumes of waste portable batteries collected in quarter 1 over the last four years (2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024). Overall, Q1 2024 is the 2nd highest collected tonnage in quarter 1 on record.
There was an increase in lead acid collections again, after there was a drop in Q1 2023.
This coincides with a decline in the amount of portable NiCd and ‘Other’ waste batteries being collected, suggesting the reliance on portable lead acid batteries being used for evidence has not changed.
Outlook for the compliance year
Based on the Q1 2024 data, the UK collection rate for 2024 is 14.81%, which is 32.91% towards to the 2024 target (45%).
