The Environment Agency published the Q1 2024 UK WEEE data on 3rd June 2024
The data demonstrates that the UK has made a good start to meeting the 2024 WEEE collection targets in most streams.
EEE placed on the UK market (POM)
The table below demonstrates that over 8,200 tonnes less EEE was placed on the UK market (POM) when comparing against the same period last year (Q1 2023).
Q1 2024 UK POM tonnages are down from this time last year, -2.4% overall, but mainly due to the Small Mixed WEEE Categories (2-10) being -7.4% down from Q1 2023. All other categories have increased, other than Photovoltaic Panels (Category 14).
Q1 2024 POM data means this is the 3rd quarter 1 tonnage in a row where there has been a decline since 2021.
The charts below compare the volumes of EEE placed onto the UK market for each stream in quarter 1 over the last four years (2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024).
WEEE collected
As the table below demonstrates, there was quite a significant increase in WEEE collected in Q1 2024 vs Q1 2023.
Collections of Large Household Appliances (Category 1), Cooling Appliances (Category 12) and Display Equipment (Category 11) specifically are much higher than this time last year. Overall collected tonnage in Q1 2024 was 13% higher than that collected in Q1 2023, with just under 16,000 tonnes more collected.
Q1 2024 WEEE Collected data means this is the highest quarter 1 total WEEE collected since 2020.
The charts below compare the volumes of WEEE collected for each stream in quarter 1 over the last four years (2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024), and as demonstrated, collections across all streams have increased in Q1 2024, apart from Lamps (Category 13).
Outlook for the compliance year
When looking at the Q1 2024 collection volumes against the collection targets for 2024, this demonstrates that most streams are on target or exceeding the targets.
Large Household Appliance (Category 1) is overachieving by some distance, due to a large increase in Regulation 43 (Distributer Takeback) collections (48% increase from Q1 2023).
Cooling Appliances (Category 12) and Display Equipment (Category 11) performance is on track, whilst Small Mixed WEEE (Categories 2-10) are slightly under performing and Lamps (Category 13) and PV Panels (Category 14) are running a bit behind.
