As environmental responsibility becomes ever more urgent, responsible waste management and a commitment to the circular economy are now essential business imperatives.

ERP UK’s commitment

As environmental responsibility becomes ever more urgent, responsible waste management and a commitment to the circular economy are now essential business imperatives.

For over two decades, ERP UK has been at the forefront of this transformation. Part of the Landbell Group, a global leader in environmental compliance solutions, ERP UK serves over 700 businesses across the UK, helping them navigate the complexities of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations, covering WEEE, and batteries and packaging. What sets us apart is our fundamental belief that compliance should be a catalyst for positive change, not merely a box-ticking exercise.

The philosophy: Embedding circularity into every service

The circular economy represents a fundamental shift from the traditional linear "take-make-consume-dispose" pattern. It's a resilient system that integrates each stage of a product's lifecycle, from design through to waste, and crucially, recycling materials back into manufacturing. This approach focuses on sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing and recycling existing materials and products to extend their life cycles as long as possible.

For ERP UK, these are the foundation of everything we do.

Our purpose is to enable our customers and ourselves to make a positive impact on the environment. We're helping businesses build sustainability into their business models and turn regulatory requirements into competitive advantages.

This philosophy manifests across our entire service proposition. Whether supporting a manufacturer with WEEE obligations, helping a retailer establish a battery takeback programme, or guiding a growing brand through packaging compliance, ERP UK's approach remains consistent: simplify the complex, provide data-driven insights and empower businesses to make decisions that benefit both their bottom line and the environment.

Delivering circularity: comprehensive EPR solutions

ERP UK's commitment to the circular economy is demonstrated through our integrated compliance services across critical waste streams.

WEEE: closing the loop on electronics

The UK’s Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations require producers to finance the collection and recycling of everything with a plug or a battery. ERP UK's WEEE compliance scheme simplifies this obligation, ensuring that when products reach end-of-life, they're properly collected, processed and their valuable materials recovered for reuse.

This includes emerging product categories like vapes and e-cigarettes. As Managing Director John Redmayne notes: "Many businesses selling vapes don't realise they're classified as distributors under the law. This means they're obligated to offer takeback for used vape products. Beyond legal compliance, this creates an opportunity to demonstrate responsible business practices to customers and communities increasingly concerned about waste."

The heating and cooling sector represents another critical area. With the UK's heat pump market experiencing rapid growth, manufacturers and importers of these systems must ensure proper end-of-life management.

Batteries: Powering the circular transition

Battery producers, whether manufacturing batteries directly or importing products containing them, must join a compliance scheme to manage collection and recycling.

ERP UK's battery compliance service handles the complexity, ensuring spent batteries are properly collected and their materials recovered. This becomes increasingly important as battery technology evolves and applications expand, from traditional portable batteries to the energy storage systems integral to renewable energy infrastructure.

Packaging: Navigating the new pEPR landscape

The packaging sector has undergone significant regulatory transformation. Businesses handling more than 25 tonnes of packaging annually with turnover exceeding £1 million now face comprehensive EPR obligations.

ERP UK's packaging compliance service helps businesses accurately collect and submit data, calculate obligations and achieve required recycling targets. Our data services team contacts suppliers, gathers necessary information and provides the insights businesses need to optimise packaging choices, reducing costs whilst enhancing environmental credentials.

Beyond services: the takeback advantage

Whilst compliance schemes ensure regulatory obligations are met, ERP UK's takeback services demonstrate how circular economy principles create tangible business value.

Effective takeback programmes serve multiple purposes. They fulfil legal obligations whilst building customer trust, protecting brand reputation and demonstrating genuine commitment to sustainability, factors that increasingly influence purchasing decisions and stakeholder relationships.

ERP UK has developed takeback solutions across multiple product categories, from waste electricals to portable and industrial batteries, secure destruction services, vapes and e-cigarettes, packaging and bespoke product takeback programmes.

Each solution is tailored to specific business needs, supported by quality-audited supplier networks and dedicated account management.

Crucially, we maintain ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 certifications, ensuring operational quality and environmental stewardship across all takeback operations.

Inspiring change in waste management: Education and engagement

ERP UK's commitment to the circular economy extends far beyond direct client services. The team actively works to educate, inspire and drive systemic change across industries and communities.

One of the most powerful examples is the Wales Schools Takeback Initiative. Since 2012, this programme has engaged thousands of Welsh schoolchildren in battery recycling, transforming them into environmental advocates.

In just eight months, 12,000 students collected 3.3 tonnes of batteries, preventing 132,000 batteries from reaching landfill. The impact goes deeper than tonnage. When children understand how battery recycling conserves resources, saves energy and reduces raw material extraction, they become champions of circularity at home, challenging family habits and connecting individual actions to planetary health.

One school, Ysgol Dôlafon, collected an impressive 3.49kg of waste batteries per pupil, demonstrating what's possible when students genuinely understand their environmental role. This ripple effect, students influencing families, who influence communities, creates lasting behavioural change that extends far beyond the classroom.

The programme's success demonstrates that effective circular economy initiatives require more than infrastructure. They need education, engagement and the recognition that today's students are tomorrow's business leaders and consumers.

Leading industry conversations

Learning and sharing at industry events

A key part of ERP UK’s work in building a circular economy involves connecting with different sectors – so we maintain a strong presence at events.

From the WEEE Conference and National Letsrecycle Conference to the Resource & Waste Management Expo and LARAC Wales conferences, our teams actively participate in shaping industry dialogue.

At sector-specific events like London Packaging Week, we support luxury, beauty, drinks and FMCG brands navigating packaging compliance and you’ll find us at conferences for growing sectors such as vapes and solar PV.

At the LARAC Conference, we engage with local authorities – providers of the recycling centers where the majority of waste electricals from households is collected and we also celebrate success - sponsoring the prestigious Awards for Excellence in recycling and waste management.

Each interaction represents an opportunity to share knowledge, discuss challenges and advance circular economy principles.

Key personnel, including Managing Director John Redmayne, Head of Business Development David Harding and Head of Operations David Meehan, make themselves available for client meetings at these events, ensuring businesses can access expert guidance when they need it most.

Demystifying compliance through education

Beyond industry events, ERP UK hosts its own schedule of workshops and webinars, providing members with free training on regulations and their practical business applications. These sessions combine online accessibility with in-person engagement, ensuring businesses of all sizes can access the expertise they need.

This educational commitment extends to public platforms. When major regulatory changes occur, our leadership provides clarity and insight in the public realm. For example, John Redmayne has appeared on BBC Breakfast and BBC 5 Live, explaining complex compliance requirements to wider audiences and helping businesses understand their obligations.

The people behind the process

Ultimately, what distinguishes ERP UK is our team delivering these services. With many years of collective compliance expertise, we've built deep knowledge across every aspect of environmental regulation.

The team's approach is characterised by accessibility, collaboration and genuine partnership. We work alongside businesses to understand unique challenges, identify optimal solutions and implement practical approaches that work in the real world.

This combination of authoritative knowledge and approachable support creates relationships that extend far beyond transactional compliance. Businesses trust ERP UK to guide them through an evolving regulatory landscape, helping them stay ahead of changes and build sustainability into their operations.

From compliance to competitive advantage

The circular economy represents both challenge and opportunity. Regulations will continue to evolve. Requirements will become more stringent. Businesses that view compliance as merely a cost to be minimised will find themselves perpetually reactive, struggling to keep pace.

We believe businesses that embrace circular economy principles and see EPR as a framework for innovation position themselves for long-term success. They build customer loyalty through demonstrated environmental commitment. They reduce costs through optimised material choices and efficient waste management. And they future-proof operations against inevitable regulatory change.
