Q3 UK Batteries Compliance Data for 2024

The Environment Agency published the Q3 2024 UK Battery data on 1^st December 2024.

Portable batteries placed on the UK market (POM)

Q3 2024 saw a 5% increase (over 450 tonnes) in the volume of portable batteries being placed on the UK market (POM) compared to the same time last year. POM tonnages in quarter 3 have been steadily increasing since a decline in 2022. Q3 2024 saw the highest POM tonnage since Q3 2020.

The charts below compare portable batteries placed onto the UK market in quarter 3 over the last four years (2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024).

Waste portable batteries collected

Q3 2024 collection data shows a 10% overall increase from the same time last year (Q3 2023). This is the 2^nd highest volume of waste portable batteries collected in Quarter 3. Notably ‘Others’ batteries decreased to -15%, while Lead Acid collection increased to 25%.

The charts below compare the volumes of waste portable batteries collected in quarter 3 over the last four years (2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024).

The increase in lead acid collections coincides with a decline in the amount of portable ‘Other’ waste batteries being collected. This suggests the reliance on portable lead acid batteries being used for evidence has not changed.

Outlook for the compliance year

Based on the Q3 2024 data, the UK collection rate for 2024 is 41.51%. This is 92.24% towards the 2024 target of 45%, and seemingly on track to meet the 2024 UK target.
