Vape recycling take-back schemes – closing the awareness gap

July 17th, 2025

The ban on single-use vapes that came into effect on 1st June 2025 marked a significant step forward for the UK’s environmental agenda.

Introduction

The ban on single-use vapes that came into effect on 1st June 2025 marked a significant step forward for the UK's environmental agenda. However, with reusable vapes continuing to grow in popularity, a new challenge has emerged: ensuring these devices are properly recycled at the end of their life.

The scale of the problem

The UK discards enough lithium through improper vape disposal each year to power 5,000 electric vehicle batteries. This represents not only a significant waste of valuable resources but also poses serious environmental risks.

When vapes are improperly disposed of, toxic substances can leach into soil and water systems. Additionally, the lithium-ion batteries found in these devices present a fire hazard in waste collection vehicles and processing facilities.

Retailer obligations under WEEE regulations

Many retailers may be unaware that under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations, all UK retailers selling vapes must provide collection facilities for consumers to return used devices when purchasing new ones. This obligation applies regardless of the retailer's size or turnover.

For larger retailers with EEE sales areas exceeding 400 square metres, the requirements go further. They must take back all 'very small WEEE' (items less than 25cm on their longest side) free of charge, regardless of whether a purchase is made.

The awareness challenge

Despite these regulations being in place, the primary obstacle to effectively vape recycling isn't a lack of infrastructure, it's a lack of awareness. Most consumers simply don't know these take-back services exist in shops both large and small.

This represents a significant opportunity for retailers to demonstrate environmental leadership while fulfilling their legal obligations. By actively promoting take-back schemes through clear signage and staff engagement, retailers can play a vital role in creating a more circular system.

How ERP UK Is supporting retailers

At ERP UK, we're helping retailers of all sizes meet their obligations and adopt more sustainable practices. Our support includes:

  • Ready-to-use collection containers designed specifically for point-of-sale vape collection
  • Straightforward online booking for collections
  • Support for promoting take-back schemes to customers
  • Guidance on staff training and consumer communication

By working closely with independent retailers, we're streamlining the take-back process and building a system where vape components get a second life, instead of ending up in landfill.

The circular opportunity

With research showing that 80% of vape materials are recyclable, there's a significant opportunity to recover valuable resources. The infrastructure for proper recycling already exists, now we need to focus on raising awareness among both retailers and consumers.
